Roça Santa Margarida

A former portuguese cocoa plantation in São Tomé.

Located in the centre of Mé-zochi Distric, the Plantation Roça Santa Margarida was founded around 1855 by Spaniard Francisco de Assis Velarde y Romero (Belard) and become one of the great cocoa plantation of Sao Tomé. The plantation was baptized with this name in reference to the founder daughter, Margarida de Assis de Freitas Belard (1847? -1924), who was a teenager when his father started to dedicate himself to agriculture.

It consisted of 4 outbuildings - Santa Margarida, Pedra Maria and S. José, in Madalena, and Maianço, in Santo Amaro, with a total cultivated area of 810 hectares.
